Why does the Midland weather radar give such a close look at storms over town?
KMAF sits about 8 miles from the city center, near Midland International Airport, so its beam scans storms over Midland close to the ground. During the June 18, 2014 storms, the radar at the Weather Forecast Office in Midland was able to show the structure of the storms as well as the near surface winds. On April 23, 2019, a storm that formed south of Interstate 20 moved directly over Midland International Airport and then dropped hail up to baseball size in the city. Even a close view cannot measure the hail that reaches the ground, so heed warnings that state a hail size.
What is the strongest wind ever recorded in Midland?
A 93 mph gust on June 27, 2007, the strongest wind recorded in Midland since official record keeping began in 1930. It broke the old record of 86 mph, set in February 1960. Smaller downbursts can do similar damage: on July 8, 2016, a microburst snapped power poles at the corner of Wall St and Powell St, with top winds estimated at 80 to 100 mph. A downburst can arrive with little warning, so move indoors as soon as a strong core heads for your part of town.
Does Midland get flash floods?
Yes, even though the city averages only 13.5 inches of rain a year. On May 14, 2010, a motorist drowned when the vehicle she was driving was swept away in floodwater on Scharbauer Drive. On June 18, 2014, parts of Wadley Avenue were under 1.5 feet of water. On May 20, 2019, storms flooded streets across Midland and stalled numerous vehicles, in a month that tied as the airport's 5th wettest May at 4.96 inches.
How much snow can Midland get?
Heavy snow does happen: 9.75 inches fell at Midland International Airport on December 11, 1998. Totals can also change sharply across a short distance. In the storm of December 30 to 31, 2020, a very sharp cutoff developed between Midland and Odessa, with 0.5 inch in East Odessa, over 5 inches at the airport, 6 inches on the east side of Midland and over 8 inches near Greenwood.
