What did the 2012 derecho look like on the Marion weather radar?
It showed a towering hail core over the city on top of the destructive straight-line winds. A KCLE cross section from about 4:30 PM on June 29, 2012 showed 60 dBZ echoes up to about 35,000 feet above ground level near Marion. Golf ball sized hail was reported near Marion, and the hail core pulled down even stronger winds, with winds over 80 mph in the city. The worst swath of wind damage in the NWS Cleveland area ran through Hancock, Wyandot, Marion, Morrow and Knox counties, where hundreds of thousands of people lost power for as long as a week.
How bad were the June 10, 2020 storms in Marion?
A powerful segment of a squall line crossed Marion County and caused sporadic damage in the city with winds up to 80 mph. The remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal drew a warm front across the Ohio Valley, a hot and moist air mass followed, and a cold front set off the storms that afternoon. The line moved from west to east even though individual cells moved from south-southwest to north-northeast. NWS Cleveland warned all 30 of its counties as the line crossed between 5 pm and midnight.
Why does snow in Marion sometimes turn to sleet?
Because warm air aloft can push north over central Ohio during a winter storm. In the January 19 to 20, 2019 storm, that warm nose allowed freezing rain and sleet to develop and persist in Marion and nearby counties for several hours on Saturday afternoon and evening. Up to 0.1 inch of freezing rain and an inch or two of sleet fell there before it switched back to all snow. The heaviest snow totals fell just north of the rain and mix line. Radar shows where precipitation falls but not its type, so watch the hourly temperatures when a storm tracks across central Ohio.
How well can the radar see weather over Marion?
It sees tall storms well but can miss low, shallow weather, because KCLE is 87 miles away. NOAA's JetStream guide explains that the radar beam gets higher above the ground and wider with distance. In its example from the Fort Worth radar at a range of 98 miles, the beam was about 11,600 feet above the ground and nearly 2 miles wide. Small storm scale features that are easy to see close to a radar are often masked at long distances.
When should you check the Marion radar?
Severe storm season
May to JulyAbout 64% of Marion County's 1996 to 2025 severe reports fall in these months. Visitors touring the Harding Home check the loop for building storms before a summer afternoon tour.
Hurricane season
June 1 to November 30On September 14, 2008, the remnants of Hurricane Ike drove a 64 mph gust across the Marion County airport. Gusts like that do not show on the rain map, so locals check the hourly wind forecast when a tropical remnant heads for Ohio.
