Can the Mansfield weather radar warn you about a flash flood?
It can show the main warning sign, storms that stall over the same area, but not where water is rising. On July 12, 2006, thunderstorms moved slowly south and stalled near US 30 along the same front that had caused flooding two days earlier. With soils still wet, flash flooding developed quickly. Significant urban flooding took place in Mansfield, where a woman died trying to rescue her daughter after the girl fell into a flooded ditch and was swept through a culvert. Runoff from the Mansfield area then drained southeast into the Mohican River.
What happened in the July 10, 2006 Mohican River flood?
A supercell stalled near the Ashland, Richland and Knox county border just south of Loudonville and dropped up to 7.5 inches of rain in 2 hours. A four foot wall of water reportedly moved down the Mohican River, forcing several people in canoes to climb into trees. Up to 700 campers had to be evacuated from Mohican State Park, many by boat. The same storm produced an F1 tornado that touched down southwest of Pleasant Hill Lake around 3:40 PM.
Have tornadoes hit near Mansfield?
Yes, and two of them reached EF2 strength in Richland County. On April 14, 2019, a supercell that formed near Marion tracked northeast across Crawford and Richland counties. Its tornado began about 3 miles southwest of Shelby around 4:42 PM and ran 17 miles to about 5 miles north of Olivesburg, reaching a maximum width of 1/2 mile on the southeast and east side of Shelby. There, one vehicle was tossed 100 feet into the air with 2 people inside, and both were unharmed. On Labor Day 2017, NWS Cleveland confirmed another EF2 tornado that crossed from Crawford County into Richland County.
