How strong was Hurricane Michael at landfall near Panama City?
Michael was a Category 5 hurricane with estimated winds of 140 knots when it made landfall near Mexico Beach and Tyndall Air Force Base in October 2018. The eye came ashore near Tyndall, southeast of Panama City. The Tyndall AFB station reported a peak gust of 121 knots. Surge flooding of 4 to 6 feet above ground hit the area around Panama City and St. Andrew Bay, and the Panama City tide gauge measured 5.3 feet above mean higher high water.
How much damage did Michael do in Bay County?
Michael's winds and storm surge caused devastating to catastrophic damage in Bay County, worst in Mexico Beach and at Tyndall AFB. More than 45,000 structures were damaged and more than 1,500 destroyed in the county, including severe damage to two hospitals. In Mexico Beach, 1,584 of the town's 1,692 buildings were damaged and 809 of those were destroyed. Storm surge drowned five people in Florida, including one near East Bay on the eastern side of the Panama City area.
