What did Hurricane Ivan do to Pensacola in 2004?
Ivan battered Pensacola after making landfall just west of Gulf Shores, Alabama, as a Category 3 hurricane with 105-knot winds on September 16, 2004. Pensacola Naval Air Station reported 76 knots sustained with a gust to 93 knots, the highest official wind report. Severe wave action on top of a 10 to 15 foot storm surge damaged the Interstate 10 bridge system across Pensacola Bay, and as much as a quarter mile of the bridge collapsed. South of the city, Perdido Key was essentially leveled.
How did Hurricane Sally flood Pensacola in 2020?
Sally flooded Pensacola with both storm surge and heavy rain after making landfall at Gulf Shores, Alabama, as a Category 2 hurricane on September 16, 2020. Just west of Naval Air Station Pensacola, 24.88 inches of rain fell, the highest total in Florida. The NOS tide gauge in Pensacola recorded a peak water level of 5.6 feet above mean higher high water. Freshwater and surge flooding put 2 to 4 feet of water in parts of downtown. The Highway 98 Three Mile Bridge over Pensacola Bay collapsed when a construction barge struck it.
What happened in Pensacola's April 2014 flood?
Pensacola Regional Airport set its greatest calendar day rainfall on record on April 29, 2014, an estimated 15.55 inches, with data going back to 1879. Data was lost in a power outage that night, so the total was estimated with dual-pol radar. In one hour 5.68 inches fell, and the 2-day total reached an estimated 20.47 inches. Across the region, the flooding opened sinkholes, cut roads in half and closed parts of I-10.
Does Pensacola get tornadoes?
Yes: on February 23, 2016, an EF-3 tornado hit the Pensacola area after its parent supercell re-intensified near the city's western suburbs. Damage began as the circulation neared the I-10 corridor and continued north and east across Escambia Bay into western Santa Rosa County. It came just 8 days after Escambia County's first documented EF-3 tornado since the National Weather Service began rating tornadoes on the Fujita scale in 1973. The supercell took shape over the Gulf hours before it hit, so on stormy days start watching the loop before storms reach the coast.
