What does a tornado from a tropical remnant look like on the Marietta weather radar?
It can be small and brief, tucked into the comma-shaped head of a short line of storms. On June 20, 2015, lines of thunderstorms formed ahead of the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill, and one brief tornado touched down in Washington County on the mesoscale comma head of one short convective line. Rated EF-0, it struck off Tullis Road southwest of Bartlett with an estimated strongest gust around 85 mph. It damaged a house and threw a small aluminum boat 140 yards from the edge of a pond before wrapping it around a tree. Small storm features like this are often masked at long distances from the radar, so treat every warning seriously.
How high does the Ohio River have to rise to flood Marietta?
Minor flooding begins at 35 feet on the river gauge at the Marietta pumphouse. At that stage Stark Street at 7th Street, Pike Street at Wayne and Elmwood Avenue are flooded, along with Greene Street at the center of Don Drumm Field. Major flooding starts at 40 feet, and at 42 feet and above most businesses, homes and roads throughout Marietta are flooded. The river reached 40.07 feet on April 5, 2024, just over the major flood mark.
What did the remnants of Hurricane Ivan do to Marietta?
They pushed the Ohio River into downtown in September 2004. Ivan's center passed across southern West Virginia on September 17, while a slow moving cold front focused the heaviest rain along and near the Ohio River, where storm totals reached 4 to 5 inches. The ground was already struggling with rain from the remnants of Frances. The Ohio crested at Marietta on September 19, and NWS Charleston photos of downtown show a line of dirt on store windows marking how high the water reached.
What is the highest the Ohio River has reached at Marietta?
The record crest on the gauge's list is 58.3 feet, set on March 29, 1913. The January 1937 flood is next at 55 feet, reached on January 26, 1937. The February 1884 flood follows at 52.9 feet. Radar can show the rain falling across the upper Ohio Valley, but a crest like that builds over days, so follow the river forecast for Marietta.
When should you check the Marietta radar?
Severe storm season
May to JulyAbout 57% of Washington County's 1996 to 2025 severe reports fall in these months. Visitors to the Campus Martius Museum check the loop for storms building upriver before a summer afternoon visit.
Hurricane season
June 1 to November 30On September 27, 2024, the remnants of Hurricane Helene brought a 38 mph gust to Marietta. Wind like that barely shows on the rain map, so locals check the hourly gusts too when a tropical remnant heads north.
