Why watch the Lufkin weather radar when a hurricane comes ashore far to the south?
Because a strong hurricane can still bring damaging wind this far inland. Hurricane Rita came ashore near Sabine Pass on September 24, 2005 with sustained winds of 120 mph, and inland hurricane warnings reached as far north as the East Texas Lakes Region. In Angelina County, 50 to 75 homes and businesses had mostly minor structural damage from high winds or fallen trees, and two people died, one under a falling tree and a teenager who picked up a live power line. An unofficial gust of around 100 mph was reported near Sam Rayburn Reservoir, and Lufkin got an estimated 5 to 6 inches of rain.
What did the December 2009 tornado do in Lufkin?
An EF3 tornado with winds of 127 to 137 mph tore through Lufkin at 9:56 p.m. on December 23, 2009. It began on the south side on Loop 287 near South Chestnut Street and tracked 4 miles to the north-northeast. It destroyed the VFW building and tossed several 18-wheelers parked at a trucking company on Loop 287 before lifting at the north end of Kit McConnico Park. A tornado after dark is almost impossible to see, so act on the warning and the radar's rotation signature rather than waiting for a look.
When does the Angelina River flood US 59 near Lufkin?
When the river gauge near Lufkin reaches 178 feet, the major flood stage, water crosses the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 59, and at 179 feet it reaches the southbound lane too. At 171 feet, moderate flood stage, high water approaches the tops of the cement support piers on the US 59 bridge and boat traffic under it becomes very difficult. Once the lower Angelina River floods above Lake Sam Rayburn, high water can last for several weeks. River levels lag the rain by days, so check the river forecast after a wet spell even when the radar has cleared.

Lufkin dropped to 4°F at 6:53 a.m. on February 16, 2021. The first winter storm had already dropped 4.5 inches of snow at Hudson by the evening of February 15. A second storm brought freezing rain, and 0.38 inch of ice had been reported 6 miles north of Hudson by early afternoon on February 17. Across Deep East Texas, a quarter to a half inch of ice led to extensive power outages.
