Very close: KLWX is about 10 miles from the city center, and the NWS Baltimore/Washington forecast office is at 43858 Weather Service Road in Sterling. Storms closer to a radar are scanned at lower levels than storms farther away, so the loop sees the lower part of storms over Leesburg well. The trade-off is that for a storm within 10 miles of the radar, the middle or upper parts might not be sampled, and the radar is limited in scanning directly overhead, an area called the cone of silence. Outages happen too: KLWX was out of service for 19 days starting September 20, 2020.
What did the June 5, 2024 tornado do north of Leesburg?
It was a brief EF-1 with peak winds estimated at 95 mph, on the ground from 6:42 to 6:43 PM EDT. It touched down southwest of Garriland Drive in a wooded area, then crossed Garriland Drive south of Turning Leaf Lane, where trees were uprooted and there was minor vinyl and window damage. The path was 1.0 miles long and up to 125 yards wide. The Sterling radar showed a rotating severe thunderstorm and then a tornado damage signature from lofted debris while the tornado was happening.
