Why does Hammond weather radar use KHDC instead of KLIX?
KHDC is the radar relocated from Slidell to Hammond, replacing the former KLIX site. The nearest station is now about 3 miles from the city center. Radar beams sample higher in the atmosphere as distance increases, so proximity matters when observing the lower parts of storms. Even with a nearby station, use official tornado warnings rather than waiting to recognize a shape in the rain display.
What made the Natalbany and Tangipahoa basins important in the August 2016 flood?
Both basins experienced record flooding during the prolonged rain event. A slow-moving upper-level low with deep tropical moisture supplied the rain. The NWS New Orleans/Baton Rouge account also documents flooded homes and businesses in the Hammond metropolitan area. Watch for echoes repeatedly crossing the same basin, then check river observations because the rain loop does not measure water already moving downstream.
Why did Hurricane Ida disrupt travel so far inland around Hammond?
Ida brought damaging wind and river flooding to Tangipahoa Parish, making an inland location no guarantee of safe travel. The final parish account says most roads were impassable because of downed trees, power lines or other debris. It also records moderate to major flooding along the Tangipahoa River and minor flooding along the Natalbany River. After a hurricane band moves away, check road closures before treating the gap on radar as a clear route.
