Can the Corpus Christi weather radar spot a tornado?

It can show the rotation, as KCRP did on October 24, 2002. That afternoon a mini-supercell produced a family of tornadoes that moved through the northwest part of Corpus Christi. As the storm passed within 5 nautical miles of the radar, the reflectivity image became harder to read, but the higher resolution velocity data clearly showed the tornadic circulation. Three tornadoes caused 26 injuries, 1 fatality and around $85 million in property losses, and two of them were rated F2. A National Weather Service study of the event notes it was the first tornado-related fatality in the city's history.

Why was Hurricane Celia so destructive in Corpus Christi?

Most of Celia's impact came from its extreme winds, and its storm surge was not significant. Hurricane warnings for Corpus Christi went out on the morning of August 3, 1970, for a high end category 1 or low end category 2 storm, and Celia then intensified rapidly before landfall that afternoon. The strongest winds crossed Corpus Christi in less than 30 minutes, with gusts 30 to 40 mph stronger than the sustained winds and an estimated 180 mph gust at Aransas Pass and Robstown. In Corpus Christi, 70 percent of residences suffered some damage, and about 9,000 homes were destroyed across the Coastal Bend. Celia caused 15 deaths in South Texas and 466 injuries.

How deadly was the 1919 hurricane in Corpus Christi?

It was the deadliest hurricane to affect the Coastal Bend of Texas. Its surge of 16 feet at Corpus Christi is the highest on record in the Corpus Christi area, and water reached 11.5 feet downtown. The North Beach area was where it turned deadly, as hundreds were swept into Nueces Bay after their homes were destroyed. The official death toll is 284, but NWS Corpus Christi calls that a significant underestimate and believes a more realistic toll is 600 to 1000 people. A seawall was built along the Bayfront in 1940 to mitigate storm surge.

Has it ever snowed in Corpus Christi?

Yes. Officially, 4.4 inches of snow were reported at Corpus Christi International Airport in the storm of December 24 and 25, 2004. That broke the previous 24-hour snowfall record of 4.3 inches, set on February 14, 1895. It was the second white Christmas ever recorded in Corpus Christi; the other came in 1918, when 0.1 inch was reported. Snow and sleet can look like light rain on radar, so check the hourly temperature when a hard cold front arrives.

How close did Hurricane Harvey come to Corpus Christi?

Harvey's center made landfall on the northern end of San Jose Island, about 5 nautical miles east of Rockport, in August 2017 after the storm had rapidly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane. Corpus Christi was spared the worst of its effects, with widespread but mostly minor damage reported. The surge inundated State Highway 361 along the entire stretch of Mustang Island. Erosion near Packery Channel interrupted the primary water supply to Port Aransas for six days.
